Stucco Painting

Stucco painting in San Diego. Built for the substrate, not painted over it.

Stucco is porous, it moves with temperature, and it cracks — that's the trade-off for how tough it is otherwise. Painting stucco right means patching hairline cracks, filling larger ones with texture-matched stucco patch, priming any raw patches, and using a coating that flexes with the wall. Elastomeric when the wall needs the thickness; high-build acrylic when it doesn't.

What do homeowners ask about Stucco Painting?

Elastomeric vs acrylic on stucco — which is right?

Elastomeric if the wall is cracking and you want the coating to bridge and flex. High-build acrylic if the stucco is sound and you want a standard premium finish. Elastomeric is thicker, more waterproof, and lasts longer on problem walls — but it's also less breathable, so if the stucco has moisture coming from inside (a leak), you'll trap it. We diagnose before we spec.

How do you fix stucco cracks before painting?

Hairline cracks under 1/16" get brushed out, cleaned, and filled with elastomeric patching compound. Larger cracks are V-grooved, backed with bond coat, filled with stucco patch, and texture-matched to the surrounding wall. Then everything gets primed before the finish coat.

Can you texture-match existing stucco?

Yes — smooth, sand, dash, lace, and knockdown textures. The skill is in the wrist and the timing. We match the pattern in small test patches, let you look at it, and adjust before we commit to the full repair.

What's the lifespan of an elastomeric coating?

10–15 years on a south or west wall in direct sun, longer on shaded exposures. The coating is UV-stable but color fade is always a factor. When it's time for a refresh, it's a wash-and-recoat — the underlying film is still there.

Do you do stucco repair without painting?

We'll do stucco repair if you're selling and just need the wall to look sound, but most stucco repair leads to paint because the patched area never exactly matches the old color. Spot-patching stucco without repainting the wall shows.

Homeowners who hired us for this

Whole interior of a 3-bedroom in four days. Crew arrived at 8, worked clean, moved furniture themselves, and the cut lines around our textured ceiling are the sharpest I've ever seen on a paint job. Color turned out exactly like the sample.

Got three quotes. Paint Pros was the only one who walked me through the stucco prep in detail — which cracks needed elastomeric, which didn't. They spec'd a premium paint, not the cheapest. Nine months in, zero issues. Fair price for the work that went in.

David K. Exterior Painting · El Cajon

Transformed our 90s oak kitchen. Doors off-site in a spray booth, sharp lines, handles upgraded. A week from drop-off to reinstall. Our kitchen looks like a $40,000 remodel but it cost us $5,400. Best ROI of anything we've done to this house.
